You can narrow your search as follows:long sword -- Matches all entries which contain both words anywhere in the entry. (An entry which contains only one of the search terms doesn't match.)
long -sword -- Matches all entries which contain long but which don't include the word sword.
Case does not matter. River, RIVER, and river will return the same results.
There is more than one way to enter special (non-ASCII) characters. See this chart for details. One option is to enter special characters as entities; for example, you can type búton as búton. Here are some entities for the special characters which occur the most frequently in these texts:

You can click on any word in the search results to obtain more information about that word.
Above an entry are the following controls:
- View original page image as: [TIFF] [PNG]: Allows you to view a scanned picture of the page as it appeared in the original paper dictionary. This allows you to conveniently check whether the online version accurately represents the original text.
- [View previous entry]: Displays the entry which came immediately before this one in the paper dictionary. This can be handy because one entry is sometimes incorrectly split into two in an uncorrected page, so you can easily access the missing part. Likewise with [View next entry].

[Comment on this entry]: You can write comments
"in the margin"
of the dictionaries. You can view margin notes written by other users
with [View comments]. These margin notes also appear on the
main message board, marked with a pencil icon
to show that they
were "penciled in" to the text.
- [Volunteer to correct this page]: If a page has not been hand-corrected, you can click this link to volunteer to correct it.
- [Report an error]: There can still be errors on a page which has already been hand-corrected once. If you find an error on a corrected page, please use [Report an error] to report it.
If a page has not been corrected, you can volunteer to correct the whole page. If a page has been corrected, you can report a single, individual error in an entry on that page.
An uncorrected page typically contains dozens of errors. For this reason, it's impractical to accept reports of individual errors on uncorrected pages.

Other
Late every Saturday night (U.S. east coast time), the database is rebuilt to incorporate the week's volunteer submissions. This takes around 45 minutes, and the search facility is not available during this time.
